Taken in the Distillery District. Closeup of the gear train for the antique drill press in the barrel making building. This drill press would have been connected to an overhead drive shaft by a large leather belt. I bet it made a hell of a racket when it was working, too.
I like the view from here - you can see that the farther away something is, the cleaner, and simpler it looks. It's when you get close up to it that you notice things like graffiti, dirt, and such. Taken from John Street, north of King.
More winter biking. This biker was riding north on Bay Street, just by the Eaton Center. I managed to get a couple of shots with him in focus. I really need more practice tracking moving subjects, but I'm relatively happy with this one. Also seen on Flickr
I see it all over the city. Bikes, chained to trees, signs, or bike stands. Left there to rot. This one has been chained up outside a restaurant near the Toronto Sun offices for over two years. Do people forget where they left them? Did the key get lost? Or was it just easier for the owners to lock it up and leave it, rather than dispose of it in a dumpster or something? Also seen on Flickr

Taken while I installed Windows XP on his PC, right after he blinked while I was taking another picture. How is it that I can set a 10 second delay, with a 1/5 second shutter speed, and still, he blinks JUST as the shutter clicks. Also seen on Flickr

I just don't think I could do it. I see all kinds of folks biking in the winter, but I don't think I could do it. I hate the way my face feels when the wind chills it, and I hate the way my fingers ache when they get cold. But, damn, it's fascinating to see the things people wear when they're biking. I'd hate to be hobbling around on crutches in the snow and ice we've got on the ground in Toronto right now. It's probably just a sprained ankle, but that can't make it any easier.
My grandfather always used to call them tree rats. They were all over the back yard at his place in Scarborough. This little guy was sharing a lunch with someone at Nathan Phillips Square the other day.
Saw this guy with his guitar outside of the Starbucks at Queen and John the other day. His hat was sitting on the seat next to him. The question I ask myself is - is he practicing, or is he busking? Either way, he no doubt came out ahead.
I don't know if he's a bike courier, or just a guy travelling around on his bike. When I was growing up, bikes went away once the snow fell. The longer I live and work in Toronto, the more I realize just how many people ride their bikes all year long. Sometimes, the gear folks wear to ride in the winter is outlandish. This guy was obviously taking advantage of the warmer weather we had, just before the snow dumped all over us. I took this shot on Queen Street, just west of Nathan Phillips Square.
This used to be a branch of the Dominion Bank. That's one half of the bank that became the Toronto Dominion Bank. I love the architecture that the old banks used when building. It projects solidity, reliability, and endurance. Of course, I don't think that it's actually a bank branch any more, and the Dominion Bank is gone, so there's a bit of a contrast there, don't you think?
Lots of people out at Nathan Philips Square the other day, enjoying the warm weather. I don't know if these two came together, but they were having lunch together.
This is my son. No - he's not Russian. No - he's not homicidal. He is, however, a wonderful goof that I love dearly. He's chopping vegetables for dinner, after buying himself a new (old) Soviet era helmet liner.
I love the streetlights on Queen near Broadview. They're so retro, and kinda cute, sitting there illuminating the sidewalk.
Since I work near Queen and University, I've spent a fair amount of time going through Osgoode Station. If you like this shot, see this one.

As much as I don't like the "new" architecture, with it's emphasis on function, I do like that they kept the bottom floor of the building when they put up the new tower. That section looks amazing at night, with all the shadows and texture.
